That splash red-orange in the tail feathers of the large hawk calling out its familiar screech as it wheels and turns above your head is always a dead giveaway as to the indentification of the red-tailed hawk.
The bird in this particular painting is an immature red-tail. Its tail feathers had not yet turned their familiar red-orange color. Unforuntely, this bird’s feathers will never have the chance to mature because it was a road kill.
The artist felt sad when he found it, but it gave him an uparalleded opportunity to really look closely at the bird. To hold one of these beautiful rapators in his hands was an absolutely wonderful, yet strange experience. This beautiful wild creature should be up in the sky gazing down, not lying dead in the artist hands. The artist felt he had to paint the hawk.
Whatever this young hawk had done with its life, in its death it was given to the artist. The artist could do nothing less then try to capture the life and vitality it had so recently surrendered.
Take a few minutes out of you busy day to just observe. Whether you see the honey bees frequenting the flowers outside on your windowsill, the sparrows on the lawn or that red-tailed hawk circling high above, you will be amazed at the beauty and peace you will find.
