History About the Lithograph:
This limited edition lithograph produced from an original water-coloring painting by Tom Novak has been signed and numbered by the artist. All plates and negatives for this limited edition print have been destroyed. This painting will not be used again for the making of limited edition fine art prints.
The large male wolf, Denali, in the foreground of this painting was one year old when the artist photographed and sketched him for this work. He was also the subject for one previous painting currently (1991-1992) touring the country in a group show.
The smaller female wolf in the background was worked up from the photos taken at Washington Park Zoo in Portland, Oregon in the spring of 1991.
The artist has been partial to wolves. Back in 1971, long before the artist ever drew or painted wolves, he and his wife would go and watch the wolf pack at Brookfield Zoo outside of Chicago.
Working with the wolf in this painting was an experience the artist never dreamed would actually occur. The artist felt it was a privilege to watch Denali move along in his effortless loping - a beautiful example of nature’s handiwork.
This powerful and intelligent life sat only inches away, gnawing on his bone, staring. He was secure in his knowledge that no way could the artist take his prize away from him and confident in knowing that he would not try. The artist awestruck, and more than happy and thankful for the opportunity to paint his portrait.
It has never been framed and is in MINT condition. This lithograph will be shipped in a large diameter shipping tube.
